Designing Obama's Brand @ Moore

Sol Sender and his team at Sender LLC have turned the letter ''O'' in Barack Obama's name into an iconic logo like the swoosh from the Nike. The innovative approach toward branding the Obama campaign has helped set it apart from what has come before. Obama's brand has sparked many conversations about the importance of design in political campaigns. When Michael Bierut from Pentagram was asked where Obama's brand stands against the best commercial brand design, he answered, ''I think it's just as good or better.'' Sol Sender shares his insight and his experience of working on one of the most recognized political brands in the AIGA Philadelphia sponsored event at Moore College of Art and Design (N. 20th St & the Benjamin Franklin Pkwy) at 7pm. Rossini's Italian Girl in Algiers @ The Academy (Friday & Sunday)

Bored with his harem, in this delightful, farcical romp, ruler Mustafà seeks a new challenge in the beautiful, shipwrecked Isabella-–who has comically stumbled into his path in search of her missing lover, Lindoro. With the help of a jealous wife, a cast of meddling servants, and Rossini’s boundless, escalating, exuberant melodies, audiences enjoy an evening of musical theatre that has them laughing from the overture to the happily-ever-after ending. Paul Shortt’s sparkling Mediterranean scenery brings exotic Algiers to life ... with elephants in tow! The celebrated voices that lit up the stage for Cinderella in 2006 return, promising pure entertainment and an evening of unforgettable vocal acrobatics. The performance is sung in Italian with English supertitles. For more information visit

Sound/Art/Space @ NEXUS (Friday & Sunday)

On a field of sound, instrumental colors are applied like paint, shaped and bent, twisted and layered. Composers Gene Coleman and Kyle Bartlett connect with the visual art of Sherif Habashi, whose powerful work appears in the Nexus Gallery space (1400 N. American Street). And Maurice Wright's witty and winning pieces for video and recorded sound explore shape, line and form with animation and music. For more information visit

An Impending Rupture of the Belly @ The Adrienne (Thursday Through Saturday)

Clay Stilts will stop at nothing to protect his family from natural disasters, nuclear terrorism, and all the other catastrophes lurking around the corner. Too bad he can't even get the guy down the street to curb his dog. But in one violent instant, Clay's paranoia overtakes him, and he finds himself confronting much more than just a pesky pet. This darkly comic play from Humana Festival playwright Matt Pelfrey was one of L.A. Weekly's Top 10 Best Plays of 2007. Apse & Serpents of W.I.S.D.O.M @ Kungfu Necktie

Apse is a lo-fi, tense and occasionally terrifying...an enviable sense of dramatic narrative...spectacular and frequently unsettling climaxes spiked with Sonic Youth guitars, Robert Toher’s disembodied vocals and a relentless rhythmic drive. West Philly's finest, Brendan O'Connor, creates serious riffage with Serpents that conjures up Robert Fripp's No Pussyfooting sessions: Blissfully heavy. Check this 21+ R5 Production at Kungfu Necktie (1250 N. Front St) at 9pm. For more information visit
