New Show, New Features, Black Lilly In Bloom, Rittenhouse Row Fest, Mt. Airy Day, A First Friday @ Art Star, Birds & Kids: The Weekend Listings May 2 - 4, 2008

Dear Philly1.com Members,

The weather forecast for this weekend includes overcast on Saturday and scattered thunder storms on Sunday, but, that should not dissuade you from getting out and enjoying what the City has to offer you this first weekend of May. We have a feeling the weather is going to turn out being better than the forecast suggests anyway.

A few agenda items before we get to the listings. Yesterday we announced a great new partnership with Evolve Productions to create and produce a public affairs tv show that will be housed and broadcast at Philly1.com and we have created an associated talent search contest. You can read the press release and find out about the contest details here:

This week we also launched a great new event management system on the site. Now, you can create events, invite members and non-members and manage the rsvp list all from Philly1.com. Please take advantage of this new feature, it's really useful. Two great events are already scheduled and listed on the site's new event calendar right on the main page. Check out the events interface here:

And now, for the listings ...

First Friday

Ryan Myers, The Sap Collector, oil on canvas, 9" x 12", $400

Art Star gallery and boutique (623 N. 2nd st) presents Occupational Hazards, a solo exhibition by Ryan Myers. Mr. Myers is 29 and received his BFA in illustration from Hartford Art School in 2000. His paintings and custom vinyl toys have been exhibited all across the US. His current body of work reflects an interruptive view into a sullen, mannequinesque world where sadness is masked in pinks, greens and blues. He lives and works in Hudson Valley, New York with his family, dog and a spiteful lovebird. In Occupational Hazards, the artist points his paint-laden brush towards the work place. Hunters, gatherers, veterinarians and more, no one is safe from the inevitable. His familiar cast of boys and girls explore the woes of labor in a place where the shadows are just as long as the faces. These works might even turn into a good investment. Walk through this beautiful park-like landscape overlooking the Schuylkill River and learn about its history, identifying as many birds as possible that you see or hear. Near the end of migration season, you may still find some temporary visitors, as well as permanent residents and those who reside at Laurel Hill for the whole summer.
