Youth Anti-Violence/Health Awareness Initiative

Over the past twenty years, youth violence has been skyrocketing in Philadelphia.  According to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office over 40% of the murders victims and 60% of the murderers were under the age of 25.   Youth between the ages of 14 – 24 years are more likely to die from being victim of crime than a car accident.

(PA) Loss of jobless benefits averted for 45,000 June 15, 2011

With less than two weeks before unemployment benefits were set to end, Gov. Tom Corbett has signed a bill that extends federally funded payments to roughly 45,000 jobless Pennsylvanians. 

   The state’s official May unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, a slight decrease from April.  That equals about 470,000 residents out of a job.

Nutter makes all recreation centers smoke-free, The executive order takes effect on July 1st.

Mayor Michael Nutter has signed an executive order making Philadelphia recreation centers 100% smoke-free.

   The new policy prohibits smoking both indoors and outdoors, including buildings, playgrounds, ball fields, courts, parking lots, ice and skating rinks, and pool areas. Playgrounds in Fairmount Park will also be smoke-free.
