2ND SOUTH PHILLY NEIGHBORHOOD DEMANDS OPEN POOLS
After Point Breeze Rally, Gray’s Ferry Demands Open Pools to Keep Kids Safe from Turf Wars and Police!
WHO: Long-term Residents of Gray’s Ferry, Parents, Churchgoers, and Civic Leaders
WHAT: Residents of Gray’s Ferry, angry that their pool is being closed and their children are being put out on the streets, are holding a community demonstration to demand that the Stinger Square Pool stays open!
WHEN: Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 at 6:00pm
WHERE: Stinger Square, on the corner of 32nd and Reed
DETAILS:
One week after Point Breeze rallied to save their swimming pool from closing, the outrage has spread to Gray’s Ferry, where residents are demanding that their only local pool remain open!
Gray’s Ferry residents are furious that their young people are being forced onto the streets this summer. The Department of Recreation claims that neighborhoods will be safe from “turf wars” due to increased police presence, but residents are not going to sit by and let their children be targeted like criminals just because they want to swim.
576,000 residents, many of them youth, use the 27 pools that are being shut down by the city. Hundreds of important summer jobs will be lost. South Philadelphia is not going to let the city put their children out onto the streets, and into danger!
MEDIA:
Gray’s Ferry residents will voice their outrage at this spirited rally! Speakers will include community leaders, children, long-term residents, and seniors. Great photo opportunities of a neighborhood coming together to fight. Lots of residents and allies from across the city will come, bright signs and a noisy crowd!
